BOSS Agriculture’s FOLD Forward Planters & Seeders Enter The 36 Metre Domain!

When BOSS Agriculture was approached by Phil Christie, from Bellata NSW, to manufacture a 36 metre planter for the 2020 summer cropping program the brief was quite simple; “Build me a 36 metre machine that can fold up narrow and can plant my summer or winter crop”. BOSS had been looking to manufacture a range of 18 & 24 metre fold forward machines and this was the catalyst to design and manufacture the new FOLD Forward range.

During the design phase BOSS received a second order for a 36 metre planter and so they manufactured 2 machines.  The planters set up with DX50 double disc row units on 2 metre row spacings with the ability to change to 1.5 metre, 1 metre or 750mm spacing’s if required. Both 36 metre machines are set up on 3 metre tramlines with Phil opting for a flexing wing and additional floatation tyre that would also allow the machine to operate as a 24 metre machine if the outside wings were removed.

The DX50 row units were fitted out with the latest offering from Precision Seeding Solutions (PSS) including V Drive, Delta Force, Furrow Force & Air Operated Trash Whippers. The simple operation of PSS’s innovative options means optimal performance in the paddock. In a 36 metre wide machine the PSS options ensure unrivalled ground contact, seed placement and seed to soil contact for the best possible crop establishment. Phil opted for a CCS tank which was supplied by RBE in Dalby to compliment the efficiency of operating a 36 metre wide machine.

Phil has planted some of his dryland cotton program with great results and most importantly in a timely window of opportunity.

BOSS delivers cropping efficiency

Just like any smart business, progressive farmers are always chasing an edge!  In Australia’s tough conditions, for cropping farmers the edge may be adapting precision agriculture technology, driving efficiencies through purchasing more reliable & robust equipment or purchasing wider equipment. BOSS Agriculture strive to deliver all of the these with a large range of disc or tyne options available for growers across Australia.

For 12 years BOSS Agriculture have worked closely with Australian growers to create solutions for farmers to plant their crops as efficiently and precisely as possible, which has led BOSS to create our new range of FOLD Forward single bar planters. While the forward folding idea is not new in agriculture as other suppliers in North America & Australia have dabbled in this field, the BOSS design creates an extremely user-friendly design that is simple to use and easy to maneuver with no extra pivot points behind the drawbar. With a unique sliding bogie assembly that slides forward when folded, weight is transferred off the tractor drawbar to create a well-balanced machine ready for road transport. The bogie design coupled with an optional mid frame wheel & wing pivot ensures great floatation and ground following ability.

The BOSS FOLD Forward range is available in 18 metre, 24 metre and 36 metre working widths and coupled with our new SX30S or SX30P Single Disc opener units’ row spacing’s from 375mm (15”) are available for winter sowing. The single bar high lift design provides easy accessibility & adjustment as an operator can simply walk along the width of the machine and set the planting depth and downforce/closing pressure on BOSS’s easy to adjust single or double disc row units. When you’re covering 28 hectares an hour at a sensible planting speed you can cover some serious ground in a day! BOSS combine all of these features with an ultra-narrow transport width of under 4.5 metres for easy safe travel.

It’s been a tough start for first time dryland cotton grower Tom Greentree of “Quisisana” Mungindi. After a challenging winter crop in 2018, Mr Greentree decided he would plant a summer crop to utilise the stored moisture on his fallow country.  Tom purchased a new BOSS 18 metre planter fitted with DX50 units and Precision Seed Metering from BOSS Agriculture to give his crop the best start possible. Mr Greentree configured his planter on 2 metre spacings with the ability to quickly convert his row spacing back to 1500mm if he decided to plant sorghum in the future. “The team at BOSS were able to design my row units so we can easily slide them between 2 metre and 1.5 metre spacings, which will give us some different planting options if needed”. Mr Greentree planted 780 hectares of Bollgard 3 after good rain in early November, “The ground conditions were a typical dryland scenario with uneven moisture in the top 2-3” of soil. The BOSS trash whippers gave us a more even seedbed, and the hydraulic Delta Force by Precision Seeding we had fitted worked a treat, keeping our planting depth spot on”. Mr Greentree planted 10 seeds to the metre and was able to achieve an average of 8 seeds per metre establishment. “Our crop establishment was excellent, we had a very even germination which was great as we have only had a 14mm rain event post planting”.

Mr Greentree’s 18 Metre Linkage BOSS Planter was one of many built by the Inverell manufacturer this year. Warren Anderson from BOSS Agriculture said many dryland growers are looking for more accuracy and longevity from their summer planting equipment, “Our DX50 row unit coupled with Precision Seeding’s Technology gives our customers a highly accurate robust precision planter. This allows dryland growers to really improve their crop establishment without the ongoing high maintenance normally associated with this equipment”. Although Mr Greentree has had a promising start to the season, it is now a waiting game to see how it finishes. At this stage crop in tracking at 6 to 7 nodes above white flower with hope that some rain will fall soon to finish the crop.

Leading up to the 2018 planting season Boss Agriculture was asked to manufacture a narrow transport 18 metre wide parallelogram tyne machine, most 18 metre parallelogram tyne planters are too wide to be legally transported on the road without a police escort. The engineering team at Boss Agriculture went to work and developed a unique folding system that allows the 18 metre wide planter to fold up under 6 metres wide, this fills a gap in the market for large scale contractors and broadacre grain producers with non connecting farms to be able to transport their equipment legally and conveniently (check your local authorities for specific rules & regulations in your area).

Boss Agriculture put four of these machines into the field for 2018 winter plant with great results. These narrow folding Bridge Frames are now available in row spacing’s of 333mm, 375mm, 400mm & 500mm.

Our new narrow-fold seed planter – designed and built from the ground up in Australia – went on show in Victoria for the first time at this month’s Elmore field days.  We introduced our fresh-faced 6m Slimline Planter, assembled in-house at our production facility at Inverell in northern NSW.

The Slimline Planter is a brand-new venture for us and is a break-out from its established range of planters of nine to 30 metres in width. First unveiled at Agquip in August, the Slimline comes with 190mm (7’5”) and 154mm (6’) row spacings and weighs up to 9380kg with bins empty, though loading up with fertiliser and small seeds can take working weight up by five tonnes. Designed for sowing pasture, fodder and cereal crops, the planter folds narrow for easy road transport without the need for a pilot vehicle in most areas.

The machine is available either with a frame-mounted air seeder or in tow-behind. Taking the first option means gaining 4500 litres in capacity in a twin bin, plus the possibility of adding a 600-litre small seeds box. Or without the frame mounted bin a customer could use an existing tow-behind airseeder they may already own. The seed box is accessed using folding steps, non-slip platform and seed bag table.

Single or double disc, precision double disc and tine-compatible, the machine has 26 degrees of wing flex for ground-following ability and, when combined with parallelogram row units, offers consistent seed placement over uneven terrain. Connections are drawbar or two-point hitch, bin lids are hydraulically operated and sight-glass windows in the main bin means product levels can be easily checked.
